Naparima College take SSFL title on final day

By November 07, 2018

Beginning the final day a point back of defending champions, Presentation College, Naparima College handled their business to claim the 2018 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) title.

Naparima had to visit Trinity College Moka on the final day, with a 2-0 win bringing them a title.

While it is always tough to visit a team like Moka and come away with three points, the task for the leaders, Presentation College, was even more gargantuan.

Presentation had to visit third place San Juan North Secondary, who were still in with a chance of winning the title when the game began, depending on whether or not Naparima won their game.

Naparima did win and so San Juan’s efforts were for naught, except that the 1-1 draw they had against Presentation, decided the title.

Presentation, leading by a point, were stunned when they went behind thanks to a brilliant strike from Isaiah Chase.

Presentation would pull level through Jardel Sinclair’s 82nd-minute effort but despite numerous chances, it was not to be their day.

In fact, the SportsMax man of the match from the game, which was carried live on SportsMax Plus, went to San Juan’s goalkeeper, Emmanuel John.

In other games on the SSFL’s final game, East Mucurapo beat St Anthony’s College 2-0, while St Mary’s College (CIC) staved off relegation with a 4-2 win over Trinity College East at home.

CIC’s victory pushed them to ninth on the table, maybe a flattering end to a season bereft of all the quality they showed in 2017.

That result, combined with Fatima College’s 3-2 win over Valencia Secondary, meant the three teams to be relegated from the SSFL are Valencia Secondary, Fatima and Bishop’s High School.

Bishop’s and Valencia had only come into the league this season.

There was one other draw on the day, with The Queen’s Royal College, drawing with Carapichaima East Secondary, 1-1.

Naparima coach, Angus Eve, painted the picture of a grateful man on the occasion of his team’s final-day coup.

“We want to give God the glory without him nothing is possible. We a;lways knew we could do and we stayed consistent. I’d like to thank the backroom staff and the principal. This win was for them,” said Eve.

“It has been very difficult with the weather patterns the grounds have been very heavy and I have to give the guys credit again today,” said Eve.
