Jamaica fight to men’s 4x400 bronze, Bahamas cop silver

By April 14, 2018

It was always going to be tough for Jamaica’s men, with an ailing team to medal in the last race on track at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games but a gutsy performance from anchor-leg runner Javon Francis put Jamaica on the podium at Carrara Stadium.

Running from fifth place, Francis circled two athletes at the top of the stretch, including the normally fast-closing Machel Cedenio on anchor for Trinidad and Tobago, taking aim at the Bahamas athlete in second place.

Unfortunately, Francis ran out of real estate before he could catch the straining Bahamian to end third in 3:01.97, just off the season best of the Bahamas, 3:01.92.

Neither team had any chance, though against the imperious Isaac Makwala for the Botswanians, the Commonwealth 100-metre champion, leading his team to 3:01.78, before doing a round of pushups with his teammates.

T&T ended fourth in 3:02.85, ahead of the season’s best of Fiji, whose members took around the stick in 3:15.10.

The Turks and Caicos Islands ended in 3:16.39, while India did not finish and Kenya were disqualified.
