It was just like old times as West Indies star Chris Gayle blasted his second fastest 50 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to push the Kings XI Punjab to a healthy 197 for 7 and eventual four-run win against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.

Making his first appearance of the season, the batsman, only included in this year’s competition following a last-minute selection by Punjab, showed he was far from a spent force after hammering 66 off 33, racing to his half-century off 22 balls. Gayle blasted seven fours and four sixes en route to the total.

The big left-hander formed the more dominant part of a 96-run opening partnership alongside the in-form K L Rahul (37 off 22), which set the foundation for a big total for Kings XI.

The partnership was broken after Rahul was caught by Dwayne Bravo off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh and Gayle followed two overs later, after popping an easy catch to Imran Tahir at short fine leg off Shane Watson's bowling.

KXIP slowed down in the last five overs but eventually reached an imposing total.

In reply, Chennai captain Dhoni scored 79 runs off just 45 deliveries, hitting five sixes and six fours, to keep alive the visitors' unlikely bid to win in what was a difficult run chase. Chennai, set a target of 198, ended up on 193-5.
