Llorente hints at LaLiga return

By Sports Desk November 07, 2018

Fernando Llorente has opened the door for a return to LaLiga as he continues to struggle for first-team opportunities at Tottenham.

Llorente has only had one season in his homeland since 2013, the 33-year-old having played in Italy with Juventus, before time with Swansea City and now Spurs.

The striker has only started 11 matches in all competitions for Tottenham since his move in 2017, Llorente finding himself playing second fiddle to Harry Kane in Mauricio Pochettino's plans.

And with his current deal set to expire in June, Llorente has hinted a return to Spain would be his preferred option.

Speaking to reporters after Tottenham's 2-1 Champions League win over PSV, he said: "I've been away from home for many years, I'd love to go back to LaLiga."

Llorente came on against PSV to help Spurs come from a goal down to earn a crucial victory, setting up Kane for Tottenham's equaliser with a well-placed header.

And he hopes his performance can be the start of more game time under Pochettino as Spurs challenge on four fronts.

"I came on and things went well, so I'm happy to have helped the team," he added.

"I hope I continue to have opportunities, it's important for me because it gives me the confidence to keep working, it's not easy when you do not play because mentally you have to be very strong to continue training hard."

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is convinced head coach Ernesto Valverde will still be in charge at Camp Nou next season.

Valverde's future with the LaLiga champions was thrown into doubt last month when he told Barca's in-house TV channel he did not know for sure if he would be at the club in the 2019-2020 campaign.

Both Barca and Valverde have an option in his contract to terminate his deal at the end of the season.

Despite leading Barca to a LaLiga and Copa del Rey double in his debut campaign in the dugout, Valverde's perceived pragmatic style has drawn its detractors.

But Bartomeu is delighted with the job the former Athletic Bilbao coach is doing and does not foresee him departing.

Speaking to Sport, Bartomeu said: "We don't have any doubts here that Valverde will be the Barcelona coach next season.

"We will speak with him, of course, in time. That's what we agreed. He's a coach we have a lot of confidence in.

"He's doing a great job. He's an intelligent person, he knows Barcelona's system of play and he manages the games in a way which we like."

Bartomeu also spoke about the future of Spain full-back Jordi Alba, who in November said it was "strange" that talks over a new deal had not begun despite his contract running out in 2020.

The Barca president, though, says 29-year-old Alba is part of the club's long-term plans.

"Of course he will continue," he added. " We are already working with him for a long renewal, for the next five years."

  • Kimmich 'perfect' for Barcelona, says Xavi Kimmich 'perfect' for Barcelona, says Xavi

Barcelona legend Xavi believes Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich would fit perfectly at Camp Nou.

The versatile 23-year-old has established himself as first-choice right-back at Bayern since moving from RB Leipzig in 2015, helping ease the impact of Phillip Lahm's retirement in 2017.

Like Lahm, Kimmich can operate at full-back and in midfield, roles he grew into under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.

Kimmich has started all 17 of Bayern's Bundesliga matches this season and has been an ever-present in their progression to the Champions League knockout stages.

His importance to Bayern means they would be unlikely to sell, but Xavi says Kimmich would be a great acquisition for his former club Barca.

"I spoke to Pep Guardiola, my ex-coach from Barcelona, about him," Xavi told Sport Bild at a media day in Doha.

"I had never heard of him before. [But] since that day, I have followed his career.

"Joshua is the present and future of Bayern and the German national team. And he can play in any position.

"He would be the perfect player for Barcelona.

"In my career, I have always kept my eyes open to find players who would suit Barca. As Philipp Lahm could, Joshua Kimmich without problems [could] play at Barcelona, that would fit well."

  • This Liverpool isn't a team of chokers – Mane This Liverpool isn't a team of chokers – Mane

Sadio Mane is convinced Liverpool will end their long wait for the title this season and is adamant they are not a team of "chokers".

Liverpool have not won England's top-flight crown for 29 years, seeing bitter rivals Manchester United overtake them as the division's most successful club in the process.

The Reds went close to Premier League success for the first time since its 1992 inception in 2013-14, but a 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea ultimately proved crucial, as Manchester City capitalised on that result to go on and lift the trophy.

With 22 matches played this term, Liverpool are top of the table and have a four-point cushion ahead of defending champions City.

Jurgen Klopp's men have lost just once – at the Etihad Stadium on January 3 – and Mane is confident they will cope with the pressure this time around.

"This is not a team of chokers. I am sure we will be champions of England," the Senegal star told reporters.

"When I wake up, I don't go to the training ground thinking we will not win. We are determined to show we are the best team in the league.

"It is not easy to hear people accuse the team of being chokers, but we have to ignore it and focus on what is in front of us.

"Liverpool had the chance to win it a few years ago and did not do it but I prefer to think it helped to bring us where we are now. This is not a team of chokers. I am sure we will win the league."
