Witsel: Pulisic & Sancho can become two of world's best wingers

By Sports Desk November 08, 2018

Christian Pulisic and Jadon Sancho can become two of the best wingers in the world, according to Borussia Dortmund team-mate Axel Witsel.

United States international Pulisic and England teenager Sancho have played starring roles for Dortmund in their excellent start to the season under Lucien Favre.

Sancho, in particular, has impressed, scoring four goals and laying on six assists in the Bundesliga to help Dortmund to top spot, where they sit four points clear of Borussia Monchengladbach and defending champions Bayern Munich going into this weekend's Klassiker.

Midfielder Witsel said of Dortmund, who he joined from Tianjin Quanjin in August: "We have a lot of new players and the way we are playing right now, usually it takes more time.

"I cannot explain why we are doing really well and this is good for us, and we will, of course, do our best to keep going like this.

"The coach, the message he gives to us, everybody listens to him, and this is important. The way we play now on the pitch is because of the players but also the message the coach gives every day in training.

"[Pulisic and Sancho are] young but really talented. If they keep going like this, they can be – I will not say the best winger – but they can become one of, because they're really talented, but they need to keep working hard, and I hope we will keep them for a few years."

Dortmund thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League in October, though they lost the reverse fixture in Spain 2-0 on Tuesday.

Asked if Dortmund can do the same against Bayern at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday, Witsel replied: "Why not? In football everything is possible, so why not?

"Against Bayern if you want to win then you have to be on your top level, and if everybody is ready – 100 per cent physically, technically and playing the football we are doing now – we can beat them."

  • Kimmich 'perfect' for Barcelona, says Xavi Kimmich 'perfect' for Barcelona, says Xavi

Barcelona legend Xavi believes Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich would fit perfectly at Camp Nou.

The versatile 23-year-old has established himself as first-choice right-back at Bayern since moving from RB Leipzig in 2015, helping ease the impact of Phillip Lahm's retirement in 2017.

Like Lahm, Kimmich can operate at full-back and in midfield, roles he grew into under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.

Kimmich has started all 17 of Bayern's Bundesliga matches this season and has been an ever-present in their progression to the Champions League knockout stages.

His importance to Bayern means they would be unlikely to sell, but Xavi says Kimmich would be a great acquisition for his former club Barca.

"I spoke to Pep Guardiola, my ex-coach from Barcelona, about him," Xavi told Sport Bild at a media day in Doha.

"I had never heard of him before. [But] since that day, I have followed his career.

"Joshua is the present and future of Bayern and the German national team. And he can play in any position.

"He would be the perfect player for Barcelona.

"In my career, I have always kept my eyes open to find players who would suit Barca. As Philipp Lahm could, Joshua Kimmich without problems [could] play at Barcelona, that would fit well."

  • We are in talks with Chelsea – Salihamidzic reiterates interest in Hudson-Odoi We are in talks with Chelsea – Salihamidzic reiterates interest in Hudson-Odoi

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic is "fully convinced" by Callum Hudon-Odoi's quality and claims talks between themselves and Chelsea are ongoing.

German champions Bayern have been strongly linked with Hudson-Odoi over the last month, with the 18-year-old winger said to be frustrated about a lack of opportunities with Chelsea.

While he has been used in cup competitions, Hudson-Odoi has played only twice in the Premier League.

Bayern have not made any secret of their interest, with Maurizio Sarri calling their open pursuit "not professional".

Salihamidzic has already said he believes Hudson-Odoi's qualities would fit in at Bayern and has now told Sport Bild: "We want to sign the player. I am fully convinced of his abilities, we are in talks with Chelsea.

"Both [end-of-season signing Benjamin Pavard and Hudson-Odoi] are not finished players yet, but we have many leaders in our team, that's why it would not be a problem if no player came in the transfer window.

"We have to find a good mix between young talents and experienced leadership players."

Bayern have also been linked with Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez, and while Salihamidzic says more talks will be held, he does not think anyone should expect his arrival in January.

"We've already had talks, There will be more," Salihamidzic said. "That he comes in winter is unrealistic."
