Spurs, Hummingbirds and Racers register wins in Berger Elite League

The Manchester Spurs, Kingston Hummingbirds and St Catherine Racers all registered wins in the last round of the Berger Elite League on Saturday night.

Anna Kay Griffith led all scorers with 42 goals from 49 attempts as the Spurs overwhelmed the St Ann Orchids 61 to 44 at the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston.

Gezelle Allison scored 12 from 19 for the Spurs who led 15-13 and 33-24 at half time. Nicole Dixon also scored seven of 15 for the winners.

Meanwhile, Simone Gordon scored 37 from 46 tries as for the Orchids who trailed by eight, 45-37 at the end of three quarters. Thristina Harwood was a disappointing five of 10 tries while Adean Thomas two from two for the Orchids.

 Defending champions Kingston Hummingbirds also featured in a high-scoring match as they got the better of Clarendon Gaters 52-45. In what was a close match throughout, the Hummingbirds led 14-11, 26-24, and 40-35 during the match when Sabrina Spence scored 37 goals from 42 attempts, Shanice Beckford netted 10 of 15 and Hasana Williams sunk five of nine tries.

Amanda Pinkney led the Gaters with 38 goals from 43 attempts.

 Shadian Hemmings scored four from seven and Petal Smith added three goals from four tries for the Gaters.

In what was the closest game of the night,  the St. Catherine Racers defeated the St. James Sharpes 42-38.

Tracy Ann Francis scored 34 from 41 and Zonasha Hinds four from six tries as the Racers fought hard to keep the Sharpes at bay.

They led 12-11 and 23-21 after the first two quarters before the Sharpes rallied to tie the scored at the end of the third.

Kestina Sturridge scored 27 from 30 attempts while Vanessa Jones, 11 from 15, and Connique Moore netted four from six tries but still came up short.

    Jamaica’s Sunshine Girlz have been asked to brave the cold of England in January for the inaugural Netball Nations League in 2020. 

    The Sunshine Girlz will find themselves among four teams in the tournament with New Zealand and South Africa joining the hosts from January 19-26.

    According to reports, Australia were also invited but had prior obligations and will not be able to participate.

    The teams are scheduled to play each other in a round-robin format from which the top two teams will make it to the final, while the bottom two play off for third.

    The Jamaicans will be privy to seeing just where they are with the challenge of South Africa on January 19. England will mark the final game of the group stage, on January 25, while the third-place playoff and final will be played on the following day.
