By January 17, 2019

Defending champions Kingston Hummingbirds and the St. Ann Orchids sealed their places Saturday’s semi-finals of the Berger Elite League after scoring wins over the St. James Sharpes and the Clarendon Gaters, respectively, on Wednesday night.

The Hummingbirds secured the second-seed by trouncing the Sharpes 61-36 at the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston.

Hasana Williams scored 39 goals from 47 attempts and Shanice Beckford 22 from 26 as the Hummingbirds pulled away to an easy win both teams were locked at 10-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Kestina Sturridge led the scoring for the Sharpes with 31 from 35 but got little support from Vanessa Jones 4 from 7 and Conique Moore one from two attempts. It was 26-19 at half time and the gap swelled to 12 points by the end of the third when the Hummingbirds led 41-29.

By securing the second seed, the Hummingbirds will face the third seed St. Ann Orchids in the first of the semi-final matches at 6 pm (7:00 pm ECT) on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Simone Gordon scored 38 goals from 43 attempts and Thristina Harwood seven from 11 as the Orchids outscored the Clarendon Gaters 45-40.

The St. Ann unit led 11-8 and 23-17 over the first two quarters but they were unable to pull away as each team scored 10 goals in the third quarter which made it anybody’s game heading into the final quarter.

However, Petal Smith’s 20 goals from 24 attempts and Shedeiky Hamilton-Barnes’ 16 of 20 attempts were not enough to overcome the deficit even with support from Amanda Pinkney who scored two goals from her two attempts and Shadian Hemmings, who had two goals from six tries.

In the second semi-final on Saturday, the top-seed Manchester Spurs will face fourth seeds Clarendon Gaters at 7:45 pm (8:45 pm ECT).
